Colonial America
Colonial America is a digitized collection of all 1,450 volumes of the CO 5 series of Colonial Office files held at The National Archives of the United Kingdom in London, plus all extracted documents associated with them. These files, dating from 1606-1822, are significant primary source material on American history and the early-modern Atlantic world. Documents in this collection offer a British colonial perspective of North America. The major highlight of the collection is all the original correspondence between the British government and the governments of the American colonies. Rutgers has access to five modules of content on this platform, which are organized by topic:
- Module I: Early Settlement, Expansion and Rivalries
- Module II: Towards Revolution
- Module III: The American Revolution
- Module IV: Legislation and Politics in the Colonies
- Module V: Growth, Trade and Development
Rutgers does not have access to any other modules on this platform.
The collection consists primarily of handwritten documents, but it also includes acts of assembly, maps, pamphlets, public notices, and newspapers.
