State Papers Online, Part III: The Stuarts: James I to Anne, 1603-1714: State Papers Domestic
State Papers Online, Part III is a digitized collection of the domestic British State Papers dating from 1603-1714, which document the Stuart era from the coronation of James I to the end of the reign of Queen Anne. Major events documented in this collection include the Gunpowder Plot, the English Civil War, the execution of Charles I, the subsequent rise of Cromwell, the Restoration of Charles II, the Great Fire of London, and the invasion of William of Orange.
In addition to the digitized manuscripts, the collection also includes the official Calendars, which are indexes with detailed summaries of the manuscripts. Each Calendar entry is fully searchable and links to its corresponding manuscript. To find manuscripts on a topic of interest, start by searching or browsing the Calendar, and then link to the manuscripts.
Manuscript types in the collection include private and official letters, musters, reports, commissions and instructions, council orders and correspondence, proclamations, memoranda and draft parliamentary bills. Most of these documents are handwritten in English, although some are in Latin or other European languages. The original manuscripts are found in The National Archives, London as series: SP 8, 14-18, 20-22, 24-34, 44.
