English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC)
Due to a cyberattack at the British Library, the official platform of the ESTC is unavailable. As an interim measure, we are linking to a temporary interface that provides access to an archived version of the ESTC data.
The English Short Title Catalogue is a shared catalog that allows you to discover books, serials, pamphlets, and ephemeral materials published from 1473 through 1800. It includes materials printed within the British Empire in all languages, materials with false imprints claiming publication within the British Empire in all languages, and materials printed outside the British Empire in English. It is the most comprehensive listing of publications associated with Great Britain from this time period.
For each item, ESTC lists which libraries hold the item. It includes holdings from over 2000 libraries worldwide. It also includes links to items that are available in free digital archives and in 2 collections owned by Rutgers, Early English Books Online and Eighteenth Century Collections Online.
ESTC includes records for every title in Pollard and Redgrave’s A Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland and Ireland and English Books Printed Abroad 1473-1640; every title in Wing’s Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland and Ireland, Wales and British America and of English Books Printed in Other Countries 1641-1700; every title in the Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue; and newspapers and other serials that began publication prior to 1801.
This resource was formerly known as the Eighteenth-Century Short Title Catalogue.
