American Civil War: Letters and Diaries includes over 1,000 memoirs, diaries, and collections of letters written by private soldiers, generals, politicians, and civilians. The database offers intimate, first-hand accounts of the war both on and off the battle field. The database includes:

  • Letters and diaries that were written contemporaneously with the events they describe
  • Letters of a personal nature (official dispatches, reports, military orders, and "public" letters are excluded)
  • Memoirs that describe events during the war (1860-1865)

Approximately 100,000 pages of diaries, letters, and memoirs by over 2,000 authors are included.

This collection may be searched along with some primary source collections covering U.S. history in U.S. History Collection (Alexander Street).

Dates covered

1848 to 1897; primarily 1861 to 1865.
