American Civil War: Letters and Diaries includes over 1,000 memoirs, diaries, and collections of letters written by private soldiers, generals, politicians, and civilians. The database offers intimate, first-hand accounts of the war both on and off the battle field. The database includes:
Letters and diaries that were written contemporaneously with the events they describe
Letters of a personal nature (official dispatches, reports, military orders, and "public" letters are excluded)
Memoirs that describe events during the war (1860-1865)
Approximately 100,000 pages of diaries, letters, and memoirs by over 2,000 authors are included.
