On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, the Douglass Library will host Evan Ruggiero, a self-identified disabled dance artist. Ruggiero specializes in musical theater and tap dance. The event will combine lecture and performance to create a "Conversation on Dance and Disability."
A brief lecture on the history of peg-leg style tap dancing will be accompanied by tap dance demonstrations performed by Ruggiero. The artistic accomplishments of African American dancer Peg Leg Bates will be referenced. Bates was a single lateral lower leg amputee. In the early part of the 20th century, he developed a unique tap dancing style that took the theatrical dance world by storm, both nationally and internationally.
