Early English Books Online

Early English Books Online contains digitized images of over 125,000 titles published from 1473-1700, including nearly every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, or British North America and nearly every work printed in English elsewhere. It includes all titles listed in:

• Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue and revised editions (1475-1640)
• Wing's Short-Title Catalogue and revised editions (1641- 1700)
• Thomason Tracts (1640-1661)
• Early English Books Tract Supplement

The Thomason Tracts consist of 22,000 items, including parliamentary speeches, news reports, sermons, religious & political tracts, 400 periodicals, and nearly 100 manuscripts. The Tract Supplement includes over 17,000 small items, such as broadsides and pamphlets, primarily from tract volumes held by the British Library. Tract volumes, much like scrapbooks, consist of small items organized by date or topic and placed into a larger volume.

Highlights of the collection include works by Malory, Bacon, More, Erasmus, Boyle, Newton, and Galileo; musical exercises by Henry Purcell; and novels by Aphra Behn. Almost 50% of the digitized works include searchable full-text transcriptions created through the Early English Books Online—Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP) program. Rutgers also has access to the separate EEBO-TCP database hosted by University of Michigan, which allows the transcriptions to be searched and viewed separately as structured SGML/XML.
