Medical Services and Warfare

Medical Services and Warfare is a collection of digitized primary sources documenting medical history during times of armed conflict dating from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The Crimean War, the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II, are the primary foci of the collection, but there are also some documents from other conflicts, such as the Boer Wars and the Spanish-American War. Documents address medical advances such as sanitation, surgical techniques, artificial limbs, x-rays, plastic surgery, and the discovery of penicillin. Other topics include rehabilitation, nursing, and the psychological toll of war. The original documents are from major libraries and museums in the United States and Canada. On this platform, Rutgers has access to the following modules:
